Col. Dan Kienker retired from the U.S. Air Force after 26 years of assignments in Germany, Korea, the Middle East and Central America. A graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, he was a prosecutor in the Fifth Judicial Circuit, South Carolina. He is currently in private practice specializing in criminal defense and domestic law.


Pete McDaniel, senior writer for Golf Digest and Tiger Woods’ biographer, is collaborating on a documentary titled “Uneven Fairways,” based on his 2000 book about Woods, Uneven Lies.

Michael Thorpe was selected by his peers as the 2009 principal of the year for Henderson County public schools.


Zollie Stevenson Jr. has been named director of the federal Title I and Title III programs at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington.


Catherine Joyner works in Information Technology Services at UNC Asheville.

Rudy Moorrees retired after 34 years as director of UNC Asheville Media Center.

David Ramseur was named chief of staff to Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska), having served in that role when Begich was mayor of Anchorage. Ramseur also was former Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles’ chief of staff.


Steven Tuttle, who earned a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of South Carolina in 1992, is the author of two publications, Census Records at the Archive and African American Genealogical Research.


David Carscaddon has been appointed dean of the School of Psychology and Counseling at Gardner-Webb University.


Sheila Ford Duncan, who led the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team to the 1984 NAIA title, is alteration manager at David’s Bridal in Bowling Green, Ky. She earned a master’s degree from UNC Greensboro and teaches textiles and apparel merchandising at Western Kentucky University. She and husband, Roger Duncan, have two children, Cressida, 8, and Roger Leon, 3.

C. Thomas Steele Jr. was named to Business North Carolina magazine’s 2009 “Legal Elite,” a group of lawyers voted best in their field by their peers. He also was appointed to the Strategic Planning and Emerging Trends Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Bar Foundation.


Larry Kenneth Harris joined First Citizens Bank in Greensboro in 2008 as a fiduciary officer, specializing in trust and estate planning.

Gina Maynard has been promoted to associate manager Webmaster/HR technology at A&W/Long John Silver’s Restaurants in Louisville, Ky.


Robert Fitzgerald was named interlibrary loan and reference librarian at High Point University.


John Howard Smith’s first book, The Perfect Rule of the Christian Religion: A History of Sandemanianism in the Eighteenth Century, was published by the State University of New York Press in January 2009. He is currently working on a history of the First Great Awakening.

Charles McCall has been promoted to district manager of the Social Security Administration office in Shelby.


Katharine Patton and Troy Wheatley were married in Asheville on May 18, 2008.


Daniel Brown is a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, where he has worked for the past 15 years. He and his wife, Cara, have two children, Mallory, 3, and Ryan, 9 months.

Ronald Dan Cloninger is an airdrop system support representative at Charleston (S.C.) Air Force Base, and is a part-time C-130 instructor navigator in the N.C. Air National Guard. He and his wife, Ashley, have two daughters, Rebekah and Emma.


Lyn Clarkson and Carroll Osteen were wed on July 24, 2008.


Christopher Hajek served four years with the U.S. Air Force Space Command as a satellite data analyst and now lives in Wilmington, N.C., where he manages a small real estate firm and deals with exporting to the European Union.


Jennifer Dinsmore Keegin and her husband, Joseph Keegin, welcomed their first child, Bailey Elizabeth, on Jan. 14, 2009.

Thomas O’Neal McCall married Pamela Stiles on Sept. 20, 2008.

Meg Purchase and Ralph Kaplan were married Oct. 26, 2008, in New Hope, Pa.

Tina Lance was promoted to vice president/branch manager of SunTrust Bank in Black Mountain, N.C., in June 2008.

Michele Sussman Walsh and Jack Walsh welcomed a daughter, Stella Anne Walsh, on July 20, 2008.


Jennifer Smith Wisdo and Jeremy Wisdo welcomed their first child, Claire Elizabeth Wisdo, on Dec. 28, 2008.


James Carter of Asheville finished in third place in the American Chamber of Commerce Executives 2008 National Sales Contest for number of sales for chambers with dues income of $500,000–$1.5 million.

Leigh Ann Henion has been named editor in chief of Appalachian State University’s literary magazine, The Cold Mountain Review.

India McHale is pursuing a Ph.D. in higher education at Penn State University, after earning a master of arts in higher education administration from the University of Michigan in December 2006. She is working on two National Science Foundation-funded studies of engineering education.

Lola Love McPartland was appointed staff development officer for BT South Tyneside in South Shields, England, in October 2008. She and husband, Richard, live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne with Millie, a rescued lurcher.

Theodore Rogers, who works at the University of Alabama-Huntsville as a researcher and instructor, shares a U.S. patent for a surveillance system.


Kim Angelon married Samuel Gaetz on Aug. 30, 2008, after graduating in May with a master of public health degree from UNC Chapel Hill. She is pursuing a doctorate in epidemiology at UNC Chapel Hill.

Nick Brannon has joined the staff at Elon University as a volunteer assistant baseball coach after two years as an associate scout for the Houston Astros. Brannon also played in the minor leagues for the Cincinnati Reds.

Holly Bullman, a regional planner at Land of Sky Regional Council in Asheville, was appointed vice president of the board of directors for the Carolina Recycling Association.

Chad Faircloth and Elizabeth Anderson were married Nov. 15, 2008.

Shelly Moss Mitchell and husband, Tyler, welcomed their second daughter, Laurel Faith, Dec. 12, 2008.

Spence Brooks O’Neill and James O’Neill welcomed a son, Frank Brooks O’Neill, on Sept. 25, 2008.

Meghan Long Shearer and husband, Andrew, celebrated the birth of their first child, Tatum Bell, on May 20, 2008. They live in Los Angeles.

Tabitha Renaldi is enrolled in a graduate program at Ashford University in teaching and learning with technology.

Eric Winters joined Navteq Corp., a provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation, as a senior systems analyst.


Autumn Joy Cartwright married Thomas Gaines Myer Jr. on Sept. 27, 2008. They live in Arden, N.C.

Andrea Bateman and Justin Staebell were married Oct. 4, 2008.

Kevin Brinson and his wife, Kim, welcomed their first child, Cora Jane, Nov. 26, 2008, in Newark, Del.

Michael Scott Brinley and Gwendolyn Lee Pearson were married Oct. 11, 2008.

David Liggett Boyd and Melissa Ruth Rosetta were married Oct. 11, 2008.

Rick Shreve was named director of finances and information services for the town of Black Mountain in February 2009. Previously he was budget manager for the town of Chapel Hill and worked as a policy analyst for the Georgia Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget. He earned a master’s degree in public finance and policy from the University of Georgia in 2005. He and his wife, Sarah Justice, have two children.


Melinda Beaver received a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Colorado last fall.

Brian Cain works for the University of North Carolina Sustainability Office as research and outreach manager.

Matt Hoyle won the 2008 Haywood Community College Superior Staff Award for a part-time employee.

Hoyle works as a computer technician and also chaired the Wellness Committee. He was instrumental in making HCC a tobacco-free campus.


Julia Lloyd-Cowden and Brian Johnson were united in marriage Oct. 25, 2008.

Kristen Willett Hansen received a master of social work degree from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in May 2007. She married Scott Hansen in Pasadena, Md., on Sept. 29, 2007, and works as a social worker at Center for Family Services.

Raymond Harmon received a master’s degree in political science from George Washington University in May 2008. He is enrolled at Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law.

Kelly Nicole Kirks and Adam Baxter ’05 were married Oct. 11, 2008.

Megan Joanna Manuel and Matthew Bryant Cole were married Oct. 11, 2008.

Megan Suzanne Willis and Brian Michael Henderson were married Sept. 13, 2008.


Adam Gray Cook and Stephanie Diane Hosack were married June 14, 2008.

Matthew Koenig and Joanne Camara Hughes were married Sept. 26, 2008.

Kimberly Gentry is a fifth-grade teacher at Ira B. Jones Elementary School in Asheville.

Anishia Young and Roland Johnson were married Sept. 2, 2005, and live in Gastonia, N.C., with their two children, Isaiah, 13, and Destiny, 2.


Amanda Baranski of Asheville works at AdvantageWest Economic Development Group as program coordinator, assistant corporate secretary and interim film commissioner for Western North Carolina.

Kimberly Garrett started her first meteorology job in Norman, Okla., at Weathernews Inc.

Grant Gilmore joined WFMY-News 2 in Greensboro as a meteorologist on the Good Morning Show and on weekends.

Maggie Ullman is the city of Asheville’s first energy coordinator, focusing full time on sustainability.

Jess Walls joined the Cary-based software company Coalmarch Productions as a code mechanic.


Nathan Durham married Gina Douthat Durham ’08 on Oct. 18, 2008, in Asheville. They met in an Atmospheric Sciences class after their professor, Doug Miller, assigned them to the same work group. Thank you, Doug!

Caroline Harkins and Josh McCarty ’06 were married in Asheville on April 25, 2008.

Scott Adam Hyder and Amanda Carol Buck were married Oct. 11, 2008.

Chadwick Shane Motsinger and Amanda Brooke Smith were wed on Oct. 11, 2008. Chad works at UNC Asheville as functional technology manager in the Alumni & Development division.
